Adjacent to Dunorlan Park in Tunbridge Wells is an oasis of humming activity.

Humming, because it is full of bees and insects visiting over 300 plots hidden behind a hedge and various locked gates. Plots are marked with various signs, honeysuckle rambling around these outside homesteads.

Today and next Saturday the 15th September you can visit this green and vibrant haven and admire marrows, pumpkins, apples and sunflowers whose heads are turning towards the ground heavy with their seeds.

You will be shown around by knowledgeable Dr. Janet Sturgis.

Beds of blackberries, cabbages, beetroots in ordered rows are next to vibrant dahlias the size of dinner plates- yes, really that size and damson trees and cooking apples drop their excess fruits onto the grass below to become compost.

Beautiful, each plot individual, unusual forms of recycling and bordering. Raised beds and those just taken over and showing signs of new ownership are fitting tributes to those who sat under an oak tree in 1930 and dreamed of a community space where those who had no gardens could come and grow produce and wear ties on Sundays. Yes, there were and are regulations. No ties need in the 21st century, but maybe someone could start that trend again.

Now it is a place to come and be, to grow plants, vegetables and flowers, to sit in the sun and watch the sky, to talk to your neighbours who share your passions.

We left, talking to those who came to pick their gladiolas, their apples and rhubarb for the Sunday crumble and I took a backward glance and thought how heavenly to have a wheelbarrow and walk through this special place,
What started as International Women's Day 2018 in Tunbridge Wells with a quickly scrawled placard and a little reenactment costume snowballed into joining with 30,000 women and girls in London for Processions 2018. Processions 2018 This event was taking place in 4 cities across Great Britain at the same time- London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff.
When I first booked an entry I was not sure if anyone would come with me but as usual the Soroptimists at Si Tunbridge Wells: Soroptimist International Tunbridge Wells were up for it. So armed with a new banner which is the more permanent fabric design we boarded the train from Tunbridge Wells armed with Ask me why I am a Soroptimist badges and our postcards and there the conversation started and it continued all day.
People were curious- where were we going and what was a Soroptimist? From a little boy who wanted to discuss the meaning of the colours green, white and purple, to the ladies from Australia and Sevenoaks on the number 9 bus from Charing Cross to Hyde Park, who didn't know us or each other, but they did by the end of our journey- we left them with postcards and a wave.We emerged from the bus momentarily pausing to take in our surrounds greeting other women who were dressed in similar colours as if we have known them for ever. From the young girls from Manchester who had left home at 7 am to travel to London to Ruth who was on her own from Norfolk but soon became one of our group. We all momentarily disappeared into a group of vibrant women all milling around the Dorchester Hotel seeking shade under the dappled trees on a Park Lane cleared of cars.

More and more women arrived, with banners and outfits and smiles and we streamed toward pantechnicons to collect our scarves of green, white and violet, chatting all the time, handing out postcards and sharing stories. It was jubilant, expressive, emotional, hot and freeing. We are so lucky to be able to vote, to celebrate that fact and to be actively encouraged by all the organisations who helped make the day so successful. We have come a long way since women (over 30) were first able to vote in 1918 but still have a long way to go and yet here we were being able to shout about it all in major cities, cleared of traffic to make our voices heard.
Being a Soroptimist is about sisterhood, and yesterday felt very positive. We had found our tribe for that day and met some fellow clubs along the way, Soroptimist International Folkestone, St Albans and Sevenoaks. We also talked to nurses, midwives, parliamentarians, feminist publishers, children, girl guides, seamstresses, WI Groups, journalists, jewellery designers, women on Mum's Net and the list goes on.
A great day and as I took my shoes off and rubbed my tired feet I reflected on one image I had seen, a tiny pebble, picked from some beach by an anonymous person and placed in London with the words suffragette painted on. We are all alone, until we find our tribe. On this day with my Soroptimist sisters we were a group who became a larger collective and together we made a noise and celebrated our rights and dreams for the future. When I became a Soroptimist I had no idea what would happen but so far it has been an amazing journey.
In friendship.
A crack has appeared in our kitchen ceiling. I had spent anxious times wondering why? Is there too much weight on the floor above? Do I have too many things? (Well, yes is the answer to that!) Today the first question was answered as the crack seemed larger.

So I pondered out loud, was it possible we had a water leak?

Yes, it turns out, we have.

A leaking water tank and now no hot water. For how long I don't know.

In my frustration I decided to sort out a few drawers and cupboards and so started with my scarves and as I was refolding the ones I no longer wear to donate to the charity shop, I remembered I had ordered a new one!

Here it is-

So I am off to play with my gifts I had put to one side in the busyness of everyday life and remember that old cliche- every cloud has a silver lining.

In this case- they are gold.

This year, 2018, I will be visiting local cemeteries and churches in search of the beautiful, the interesting and the poignant. First stop is St Peter's Church Southborough. In the corner near the boundary wall I found what I believe is the only surviving Angel within the grounds. In Memory of Clara, she is framed by beautiful orange lichen, or Xanthoria parietina. British Newspaper Archive research reveals that on the 16th May 1875 Clara, the 'beloved wife of George Delves' died at Grove Lodge, Southborough.newtonhouseltdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08624175757185415703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645391908485943958.post-85502252867168723602017-05-20T20:38:00.000+02:002017-05-20T20:38:07.074+02:00Belgians Refugees in Tunbridge Wells 1914

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14.0pt; line-height: 200%;"> Week One: First thoughts: The Belgian Refugees in Tunbridge Wells; A
Weekly Diary by Caroline Auckland

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">The very first thing I
decided to do after joining this community project was turn to the written
past. We had been asked to think about what we might like to work on, research
or how we might contribute.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">I decided to scan the
local newspaper, the Kent & Sussex
Courier, of 1914, for references to Belgian refugees in the area. Firstly
to see if there were any and secondly to isolate themes. Yes, there were
references and now I have a file full of themes with columns of text waiting to
be dissected.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">But, unexpectedly the
major item which jumped out of the editions I scanned digitally on British
Newspaper Archives on-line was not an editorial piece, it was an advertisement.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">An ephemeral filler, the
search function had located the word ‘Belgian’ and provided me with the first
challenge to my perception of this project.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">This posed the following
issues:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">A respectable shop
advertises its wares. Seasonally marketing products to increase its own
profits.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">By introducing a
nationalistic title to ‘children’, defining them as either British or Belgian
within the same sentence, both groups them as a collective - ‘children’ and
separates them as different from each other within that definition. ‘British
Toys for British & Belgian Children’ also promotes home produced items, but
by prefixing the child with a country of origin suggests that the child from
one country is different to another.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Do they need different
toys?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Implicit is gender
reference.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">The advertisement
suggests they need: ‘Dolls! Dolls! Dolls!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">‘British, French,
Belgian, Russian and Indian Soldiers.’ The miniature toys of war, but even they
are defined by race.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Is this to appeal to the
Belgian families to come and buy toys for their children?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Or is this an altruistic
appeal to the local community to visit the store to buy toys to donate to the
refugees who have arrived with very little and are being provided with clothing
and homes by local committees, families and the church?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Have their children
become objects of social curiosity, almost playthings, a counter celebrity status,
and the children of war. They become the ‘other’ the outsiders, their needs
defined by their place of birth or departure and slightly exotic in their
differences.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Dolls are not listed by

proximity to the railway station is also interesting. This station is where
many of the refugees arrived in Tunbridge Wells and it is also the main travel
artery to London and the coast. Which, significantly, is even mentioned in the
advertisement ‘R.W. Weekes Opposite S.E.& C.R. Station, Tunbridge Wells’
therefore it could be suggested positioning itself as a symbol of modernity,
movement and connections.

What to do after finishing an MA? The books are not tidied away nor the papers filed. I am awaiting the final confirmed result and feel a little in limbo land. So when in doubt go back to a museum. I am so lucky to have Tunbridge Wells Museum as my local resource. Others may go shopping on a Saturday, I go back to the past. This time not to research but to play, to be inspired and to relax a little. I was worried I had forgotten how to just be, to have no expectations, no requirement for precision.

The academic course followed me in my head as I wandered around the museum looking for inspiration. Should the object I chose be Victorian? If I copy it will it be plagiarism? Can I even remember how to hold a pencil to draw rather than take notes in the British Library?

I should not have worried, in the expert hands of Elizabeth Harbour the inner child emerged and I chose this horse brass for inspiration. Liking its contained, repetitive pattern, its smallness and solid metallic surface I started to draw.

But as the process continued, I realised just how difficult it is to repeat patterns perfectly and physically I could feel myself relax. The shoulders which had been weighed down with academia began to feel lighter and my drawing began to move outside of the contained space. Perfect hearts wanted to be different from the hearts next to them, they wanted to leave the circle, fly off into their own space, to elongate and kick left and right rather than just tick a box of perfection.

Roller-brushed with acrylic paint and then randomly outlined a few hearts with black fabric pen and my tote bags were hung to dry.
The others in the class were creating amazing items all inspired by different objects from around the museum, butterflies and birds from the Natural History Section being a particular source of reference. So I carried on playing and scattered my hearts as if they were being blown by the wind, the bold blue a visual representation of strong gusts.
Yes, a massive image. Because that is how large this whole experience has been for me. I did write another blog post, but it in the end that stays on the back burner or rather it has been inserted into the MA conclusion because it came from the heart. Although it might be edited or even edited out, it needs to sit awhile amongst academic reasoning although it is a personal response.

This has been the hardest two years of my life. However, I would not have swapped it for a comfortable existence. I count my blessings and my library tickets. My access to the British Library, Senate House and Birkbeck, JStor and on-line Victorian periodicals. I love my new friends who are as mad as I am, who adore Victorian cemeteries, smelly books and highlighting the printed page. I've enjoyed the meeting of minds, the feeling out of my depth and the new literature written before I was born. It has been a self-education from which I am yet to graduate.

That self-sabotage voice says 'give-up', but I don't want to. I have a duty to finish what I have started, if only for myself and to tell a little story from the past. newtonhouseltdhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08624175757185415703noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7645391908485943958.post-69521386371949451552016-06-19T12:22:00.002+02:002016-06-19T12:22:53.815+02:00Notes from the Archive : Part Three

The days out exploring, the nights in watching rubbish on the TV.
It isn't just the changing seasons that seem to have passed me by .

So, from now on, in between the studying and the procrastination,
I am endeavouring to walk outside.

It might be considered a form of deviation from the end goal.

I call it, thinking time around the archives.

So here I am again. After a long time away from my blog I felt the need to return to these pages.

I am now writing my dissertation for my MA in Victorian Studies.

Frankly I feel a little rusty.

I have missed my morning pages, my scribbles and my writing classes with the wonderful Sarah Salway.

I can't even really say exactly what I am writing about for fear of plagiarising myself.

But the visuals are a clue, of time and place.

But not of gender or artefact.

I have discovered that I love archives, old papers, illegible handwriting and the smell of lives lived. This is the view from my archive chair. Although I do choose a different aspect each time I visit.
Today, was particularly beautiful.

I walked amongst rhododendrons fragrant with azaleas heady scent.

Finding this hidden pond reminded me of Monet's Water Lilies. It may be slightly out of focus but that resembles my research at the moment, it's all just an impression and I am looking for clarity. The writing must be academic so for now the blog page will continue with that other writing tool of mine - my eyes. In the future, if the commas and semi-colons are all in the right place then I might be able to share what has occupied me for months but until then I will occasionally post from the research field with visual reminders of a place once home to a family who were very innovative.
3 breaks, the wine glass after the hot wash, the champagne glass hit by the cracker contents and then the glass plate destroyed in the microwave.

A visit to the cemetery and my dress caught on the angel wings on my mother's grave and now I have a hole in my black dress. It was as I was walking away, she wanted me to stay and tell her more. So I gardened in the rain. I raked weeds and pulled roots, the candle burned on.

And what am I reminded of as I light candles and leave roses?
I didn't tell her all the news:

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

I was absolutely thrilled to be awarded The John Walter Salver by Author Wendy Clarke at the Society of Women Writers and Journalists Christmas Celebration in December 2015. Here we are with SWWJ Patron Sir Tim Rice.

Normally, I am quite shy and hide myself in photographs by bending my head and looking down at the written page, you only have to look at my profile picture!
But as I am struggling with writing an academic essay I keep returning to this event as a prompt to continue with the work. I started the MA in Victorian Studies as an aid to writing my novel and before I can return to my characters who are currently filed away in sections in many notebooks, I need to learn more about the period so that I can bring them to life with authenticity.

In embarking on an MA I have had to re-order my life and my bookshelves. The moderns have had to be rehoused to the Oxfam bookshop to make way for the books I need to or intend to read. Pencils have had to be sharpened as no pens are allowed in The British Library. Even my wardrobe has had to change as hours of work mean less walking outside and more staring at the ceiling whilst thinking of the correct word. I agonize over detail knowing that 'I' does not matter as concept as the 'other' and more learned point of view is the most valuable one.

As I draft, write and then re-write my essay, I know that my creative writing will need the same approach in much the same way as the submission needed for this competition. I only hope that the rest of this journey will have a positive outcome.
So one moment of joy amongst days and nights of academic stress and self-doubt.

It is dark and the phone rings in the early hours. You take the message but cannot sleep .
Dressing in the dark, driving in the dark along empty roads the lights all in your favour.
The ambulance has gone there is nothing you can do... but wait.

So I wait in the quietest place I know. Surrounded by people, I watch the sun rise but I think I am the only mortal to see the sky in this place at this time. Mindful of the novel I have just finished I set my camera to sepia and walk with Victorian eyes.

I love it when things go full circle.
After months of researching, reading and writing for Heritage Open Days for the Friends of Tunbridge Wells Cemetery and finally presenting my walk and talk on Women, Writers and Widows, I have been filing my notes away. As always the research never stops, even when the event is over the mind and the eye are always alert.
Today I visited Watts Gallery and stood in front of Orpheus and Eurydice by G.F.Watts and silently my heart skipped a beat and I was back in Tunbridge Wells Cemetery standing at the grave of Rachel Beer. I had listed the artists included in the 188 lots of her house sale, Chancellor House, Tunbridge Wells by Christie's on July 22nd 1927 and they included Watts. I knew that from the time spent in the British Library going through the sale details. So on arriving home I checked again and also referred to The Times report of July 23, 1927; pg.9; Issue 44641 [ for those of you who like academic referencing] and there it was G.F.Watts, Orpheus and Eurydice- 320 guineas [At today's prices£19,202.34].

I am sure it is worth so much more.
And so indeed, is Rachel Beer.

Throughout the day I thought again, to find the Victorian Woman one needs to go through the Victorian Man.

And here I refer to her nephew, Siegfried Sassoon, from his book 'The Old Century and Seven More Years' p. 102.

'I wanted to be there myself, helping Auntie Rachel to enjoy herself. Mixed up with this was the idea of Orpheus and Eurydice. In the hall at Auntie Rachel's house there was a picture of them by G.F.Watts.[...] I had a conflicting awareness of what I desired for Auntie Rachel and of her doomed endeavour to bring back from the underworld of death that happiness which she had once known and which she refused to give up as lost beyond recovery.'

Rachel Beer 1858-1927, First female newspaper editor. Editor of the Observer, Owner and editor of The Sunday Times in 1893. Vice-President of the Society of Women Journalists [The First Lady of Fleet Street, E. Negev,Y. Koren (2011)].

After spending months preparing for my event I planned a personal reward which unfortunately was cancelled. But the upside of this was that I went to St Paul's Church in Rusthall instead. Whilst waiting for the doors to open and World War Two to unfold on the display panels I wandered around the old cemetery.

I was interested as some of the individuals I had been researching for Tunbridge Wells Cemetery had had their funerals at St Paul's along with other connections. I was intent on finding information inside the church. I wasn't in a particularly photographic frame of mind but thankfully my camera was by my side.

But here I came across a multitude of Angels in such a compact cemetery, an oasis of peace and tranquility. I found this kneeling Angel with her feet exposed a delightful detail. She was obviously meant to be observed from all angles.

Then, there were the reading angels

The weeping angels

And who would not weep, reading these words.

Fabulous afternoon with photographer Andrew Bruce at Tunbridge Wells Museum.
After considering photography in its historical context with a whiz through Fox Talbot, Galton and Potter's taxidermy cats through to modern day wildlife photographic images we then had our chance to have our hands on experience with taxidermy animals.
No-matter what one thinks about stuffed animals the fact is the Victorians travelled the world, killed and then catalogued it and our museums are stuffed full, literally, with examples of their work. For many of us, visits to museums as children is how we have informed our early knowledge of strange and peculiar animals. Nocturnal specimens alongside exotic creatures and the more familiar birds and family pets, placed behind glass gazing out of their cases forever frozen in time.

I was attracted to a singular magpie and with the words one for sorrow in my head I explored the museum for a place to exhibit her alongside another artefact. I did have a play with a squirrel called Colin as well.

Attracted to a portrait because of the feathers in the hat, I placed her with the aid of tripods, string and Andrew's help. Sometimes you do not need to know any more. For me the result is about possession and freedom. This bird does not want to become just feathers in a hat in much the same way as the female image is a portrait, she is also an object, a possession. I wanted to show an attempt at escape towards the light, but of course the bird is caged within the museum the exit barred by grills and all is an illusion. I later find that this is a marital portrait and that the sitter has already rejected two suitors. A feisty lady, with individual wealth, she knows that all she possesses will become her husband's on marriage. She will be his possession, her property his. My bird has flow out of the portrait but in reality both are objects, both no longer alive, and both frozen in time.
Andrew used a phrase which summed up the day-''Photography embalms time.'

Then it was time to wrap the exhibits up to go back into the storeroom.

When I was at primary school on my way home I would meander up Beulah Road in Tunbridge Wells. I say up, because after a long day the slight incline appeared to be a steep hill. Often I would gaze into windows, whilst my long socks would fall in Michelin man tyres around my ankles, the elastic having gone. One house I passed would always have a man sitting at a table covered with towers of books and papers. What he was researching or writing I probably will never know, unless a reader of this blog has a similar connection with place and time as myself. However, now in preparation for Heritage Open Days, my table resembles his. Piles of papers, in order under name, but to anyone else, just piles of paper, have taken over my house, my life and my mind.

It may appear lonely, obsessive even. But to me it is fascinating. Bringing to life, those now only remembered on a grave stone in an infrequently visited spot, the cemetery in Tunbridge Wells.
But I believe, the dead left memorial stones for a reason, that being to be remembered.
So my quest is to search out their stories, their lives, their idiosyncrasies, their adventures.

In preparing for my talk, Women, Writers and Widows on September 12, 2015, I have had fun, amazement and connectivity. Connectivity, mainly because so many of the eminent people of Tunbridge Wells were connected . Fun, because serious people do have a sense of humour, you just need to look for their playful side. Amazement, because we as twenty-first century individuals think we discovered the world , but no, the Victorians were there before us and actually they were much more adventurous than us, taking risks and exploring the world without mobiles, in a time when letters took ages to arrive and photography was a unique record.

So, spare a thought for everyone involved in Heritage Open Days. We have all been working long hours to ensure that visitors will have an interesting time. But we are filled with a passion for heritage which we want to share. So come along and partake of as much as you can fit in over four glorious days in September.

Whilst I am out talking and walking, my family will be clearing the table and we can share a meal around the table afterwards.
Normally I would write enormous amounts about place and history. But this cemetery is so large and overwhelming images will suffice. It is the second time I have visited and nothing is the same. The acreage is huge, the monuments many, the season different and indeed is the reason.
A cemetery tour, not a book launch. My camera was playing tricks and so the images I have salvaged are here as a gentle reminder to visit again.

Out whilst the Town was sleeping to catch the morning light for a special project, I came across a sad sight.
At first I thought it was rubbish from a good night out in the churchyard but as I went closer to investigate I saw that its contents were not food debris.
New, or gently used items, presumably too good to be thrown away had effectively become rubbish overnight. I have no idea which shop doorstep they had been taken from. But obviously someone left them at a closed charity shop as a donation. They were then removed to be rummaged through by an unintended recipient.

Great that people want to donate. But this is one of the reasons charity shops ask that donations are not left after closing hours. So instead of charity, we now have theft and mess. Not only that a beautiful tranquil place has become a dumping ground, not just to bottles and cans and rubbish that seem to be part of Tunbridge Wells street furniture this morning. I hope whoever took those bags really needed them???

Is this your stuff?

At this stage, I am not even really happy to copyright these photographs but intellectual copyright is a whole other issue. In the meantime Trinity Arts Centre and churchyard is a heritage gem not a rubbish dump!
Give to charity in opening hours or take it to the recycling units or better still put it in your bin.
Rant over.
Evenings by the sea, after an impromptu drive to the coast. A drink in a pub, fish and chips on the beach watched by nothing more than hungry seagulls and a red moon emerging from a sea warmed by its heat.
